ZEISS conducts Free Blindness Prevention Camp on the occasion of Children's Day

Over 350 school children and their families receive free eye check-up

On the occasion of Children's Day, Carl Zeiss India in association with Nethradhama Superspecialty Eye Hospital, Bangalore and Rotary Bangalore South Parade today organized a free blindness prevention eye camp at the Govt. Higher Primary School in Peenya, Bangalore.

The camp was inaugurated by Rtn. K. S. Nagendra, Dist. Governor, (RI Dist 3190), Rotary, Dr. Sri Ganesh, Chairman, Nethradhama Hospitals and Mr. V Srinivasan, MD, Carl Zeiss India. The camp was held between 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Commenting on this initiative, V. Srinivasan, MD, Carl Zeiss India said, “Social obligation is mandated by the constitution of the ZEISS Foundation. ZEISS supports the global fight against blindness in many significant ways, including as a founding corporate sponsor of the ‘VISION 2020: The Right to Sight’, a project by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). India is home to nearly 8.1 million blind, and 75 percent of this is avoidable, curable or preventable. Initiatives like these are extremely important as they can help detect and correct eye conditions in children at an early age.”

Dr. Sri Ganesh, Chairman, Nethradhama Hospitals, said, “During a child's first 12 years, 80 percent of all learning happens through vision. And yet most children have not had a comprehensive eye exam. Majority of students identified as problem learners have undetected vision problems. Vision problems can start at an early age and early detection is the key to good vision."

Over 350 school students along with their parents and grandparents were screened free of cost for common refractive errors and diseases like Cataract, Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma. Spectacles were given free of cost to the needy children. Also for cases that require cataract surgeries, they will be done free of cost at Nethradhama Super Specialty Eye Hospital, Bangalore.
