For most people it has become a habit they take for granted – on sunny days, they put on sunscreen to protect their skin from damaging UV rays. However, many of us forget that we need to protect our eyes as well. UV-A and UV-B rays do not only attack the skin, but also our vision.
Recent research confirms it: If we expose our eyes to dangerous rays for extended periods of time, we put ourselves at risk of developing vision problems and even diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration (this illness impairs the vision in the central facial area as a result of killing off retina cells). Even the eyes can get sunburned; a condition experts refer to as photokeratis. What can we do to protect our eyes? As sunscreen is not available, we have to wear lenses that protect our most important sensory organs.
